Debate on 2011 England riots

On 4 December 2012, the MP for Regents Park and Kensington North, Karen Buck, led a Westminster Hall debate on lessons learned from the 2011 England riots.

Riots spread to many towns and cities following a peaceful march highlighting the shooting of Mark Duggan on 4 August 2011.

Parts of London including Tottenham, Croydon and Ealing were looted, with disturbances also breaking out in cities including Manchester, Birmingham and Nottingham.

Four people died as a result of the riots, and more than 3,000 people have been arrested in connection with disturbances.

Ministers and police chiefs clashed over who was responsible for bringing about a surge in police numbers on the streets of London from 6,000 to 16,000 as the riots intensified.
