Government re-affirms support for victims of child abuse

The government is committed to ensuring that victims of child sexual exploitation "feel empowered to come forward" and report the abuse, Home Office Minister Jeremy Browne has said.

As MPs continued a backbench business debate on the subject on 13 November 2012, Mr Browne said it was "vital" that victims "receive support to help recover from the trauma of this hateful crime".

Labour backbencher Simon Danczuk called for an investigation into a report that the late Liberal MP Sir Cyril Smith abused residents of a boys' hostel.

Mr Danczuk, the MP for Rochdale, urged Greater Manchester Police to consider re-opening enquiries into Sir Cyril after allegations were published on a political news website.
