Debate on the North East economy

MPs have conducted a Westminster Hall debate on the economy of north-east England on 13 November 2012.

The region recently received £120m of government funding, as part of the Regional Growth Fund.

The North East is the only region in the UK that is now a net exporter, and has the highest value of goods exports relative to the size of its economy.

However, the region has the highest jobless figures in the country, with one in nine adults currently out of work.

Unemployment is nearly twice as high in the North East as in the South East, with the number of unemployed people in the region rising by 6,000 in the first three months of 2012.

The debate was led by the Labour MP for South Shields, David Miliband.
