Regional pay for teachers

The Liberal Democrat MP for Southport, John Pugh, led a Westminster Hall debate on 18 September 2012 on regional and local pay for teachers.

In his Autumn Statement in November last year, the Chancellor said pay review bodies would be asked to consider how public sector pay could be made more responsive to local labour markets.

In his Budget in March, he added that local factors, such as the cost of living and private sector pay rates, should be taken into account in future when awarding salaries.

However, critics say the move could lead to nurses, teachers and civil servants being paid less in the north than they are in parts of the south east.
