Debate on Sri Lanka

The Labour MP for Ealing Southall, Virendra Sharma, led a Westminster Hall debate on 22 February 2012 on human rights in Sri Lanka.

In 2009, government forces defeated the rebel Tamil Tigers group, although both sides have been accused of war crimes.

Between 7,000 and 20,000 people were killed in the final months of the conflict, which had been going on for more than 30 years.

The UN described the situation in Sri Lanka during 2009 as a "bloodbath", although the country's government had dismissed reports of war crimes and has rejected calls for an inquiry
