MP urges progress on social mobility

Conservative MP Esther McVey has urged the government to go further in promoting social mobility, during a Westminster Hall debate on 31 January 2012.

She said than only one in nine people from poor backgrounds made it in to the top income bracket - as opposed to over half of people who were born in to wealthy backgrounds.

Ms McVey has previously highlighted the work of the Social Mobility Foundation, which seeks to support high-achieving young people from deprived backgrounds into top universities and professions.

It provides mentoring, internships and university application support.
