Armed forces and Scottish referendum

MPs were due to hold a Westminster Hall debate on 25 January 2012 on the participation of Scottish soldiers in a referendum on Scottish independence.

However the initiator of the debate, the Conservative MP for Wyre and Preston North, Ben Wallace, did not appear for the start of the debate, meaning it was cancelled.

The British Armed Forces Federation (BAFF) has said there needs to be clarification over the logistics of participating in an independence referendum by Scottish soldiers serving overseas.

It has stated that the franchise for the referendum must not be less than the franchise for Scottish parliamentary and local government elections.
