Labour MP Joan Ruddock proposed legislation seeking to tighten planning permission restrictions for high street betting shops on 19 July 2011.
Ms Ruddock, the MP for Lewisham Deptford, wants local councils to be able to refuse applications for new betting shops if there are already several bookmakers in an area.
At present councils cannot veto new betting shops from opening solely on these grounds.
