Squatting debate

Conservative MP Mike Weatherley used a Westminster Hall debate on 30 March 2011 to highlight his campaign to criminalise squatting.

Currently landlords have to go through the civil courts to get squatters or problem tenants evicted.

n Scotland, squatting is a criminal as well as a civil offence but in England, Wales and Northern Ireland it is a civil offence only.

In Scotland, owners can evict squatters without notice and they could face a fine or a prison sentence.
