Public Accounts Committee

MPs have been taking evidence on the accountability of accounting officers on 19 January 2011.

The committee heard from Sir Gus O'Donnell, Cabinet Secretary, head of the Home Civil Service and Sir Nicholas Macpherson, who is permanent secretary at the Treasury; as well as two representatives of the Cabinet Office: Francis Maude and Lord Browne, who is leading the Efficiency and Reform Board.

The session examined Parliamentary oversight of public funds and examined key aspects of the current model of accountability.

Accountability rests largely on the personal accountability of Officers to Parliament.
