Adjournment debate

On 8 July 2010, Tory MP Damian Collins led an adjournment debate on preparations for commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The Imperial War Museum in London is planning to lead the national commemoration of the First World War centenary in 2014.

Mr Collins told MPs that he hoped to start a debate on how best to mark the centenary, urging the government to consider what support it could give to "reconnect people with those stories and the sacrifices that so many millions of people made during that war".

He suggested that ministers could launch a "national day of remembrance to mark the centenary, perhaps with a national programme of events".
