The Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has defended the government's new food strategy, during a committee hearing on 13 January 2010.

MPs on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee questioned Mr Benn on the recently introduced policy document, which aims to boost food production whilst reducing the impact on the environment.

Mr Benn has claimed that climate change and a rising population means that food production levels cannot be taken for granted.

The new 20-year food strategy includes plans for clearer labelling, and a reduction in food waste.
