President of the European Parliament

The President of the European Parliament chairs plenary sessions and represents the European Parliament to the outside world.

The President is elected by MEPs, sometimes after numerous rounds of voting to eliminate other candidates.

He or she serves half a Parliamentary term, which is two-and-a-half years - although this can be renewed.

The current President is Polish MEP Jerzy Buzek.
