Commission president Barroso's response to Nobel Prize award

The President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, made a speech at the Commission headquarters in Brussels, following the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union.

Speaking after the news of the prize on 12 October 2012, he said it was a "great honour for the EU and for all member states".

He highlighted that "at its origins, the EU brought together nations devastated by war".

The Nobel Prize committee said the EU had helped to transform Europe from a continent of war to a continent of peace.
