Young parliamentarians got to sit on the hallowed green benches
|
MPs were ousted from the House of Commons on Friday 30 October as young parliamentarians held a series of debates. In a historic move, Members of the UK Youth Parliament (MYPs) were allowed to sit on the historic green benches and discuss topics including job opportunities for young people and lowering the voting age to 16. MPs voted in March to allow MYPs to sit in the Commons for one day of debate. The UK Youth Parliament was established in 1999 and provides opportunities for teenagers to use their voice to bring about social and political change. MYPs are elected annually from across the UK and anyone aged 11 to 18 can vote or stand as a candidate.
Recorded coverage of Friday 30 November's afternoon sitting of the UK Youth Parliament in the House of Commons will be shown on BBC Parliament at 9pm on Saturday 7 November.
