US-led forces have begun a heavy attack on the city of Falluja in Iraq, where many rebels are living.
The attack has been expected for weeks, but on Monday the interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi said US and Iraqi troops could start attacking.
Thousands of US marines and troops are reported to be fighting rebels in two northern areas of Falluja.
Earlier, US and Iraqi troops took control of the city's main hospital and two bridges over the Euphrates River.
