Updated 03 November 2004, 22.10

George Bush

George W Bush
Re-elected President of the US

On winning: Thank you all. Thank you all for coming. We had a long night and a great night. The voters turned out in records numbers and delivered an historic victory.

On his opponent: Senator Kerry waged a spirited campaign, and he and his supporters can be proud of their efforts.

On terrorism: With good allies at our side, we will fight this war on terror with every resource of our national power so our children can live in freedom and in peace.

On the future: The United States of America goes forward with confidence and faith. I see a great day coming for our country and I am eager for the work ahead.

On defeat: I wish - you do not know how much - I could have brought this race home to you.

On terrorism: Now, more than ever, with our soldiers in harm's way we must stand together to succeed in Iraq and win the war on terror.

On the future: America is in need of unity and longing for a larger measure of compassion. I hope President Bush will advance these values in the coming years.

On the result: I congratulated President Bush on his victory and said to Senator Kerry that I thought he fought an outstanding campaign

On terrorism: President Bush's re-election comes at a critical time. A world that is fractured, divided and uncertain must be brought together to fight this global terrorism in all its forms.

On why the election matters to us: It is of particular significance to Britain, not least because America and the United Kingdom have a unique bond through our shared history and traditions and, above all, through our shared belief in the values of freedom and democracy.
