Mr Arafat travelled to France by helicopter, after Israel said it would definitely allow him to return from treatment abroad.

He had been having stomach pains for over two weeks before his condition got worse on Wednesday night.

A Palestinian spokeswoman said Mr Arafat had gastric flu, but full diagnosis would take a few days.

Mr Arafat was accompanied by his wife, Suha, when he arrived at the hospital where is being treated.

It's thought the medical centre specialises in blood disorders.

While Mr Arafat is having treatment the Palestinian Authority, the prime minister and legislative council will take over leadership.
