Israel votes to pull out of Gaza
Updated 27 October 2004, 07.36
Israel has voted to remove settlers from Gaza
Israeli politicians have voted for a plan for Jewish settlers to leave a piece of land called the Gaza Strip.

Israel has occupied the Strip, which is home to millions of Palestinians, since a war in 1967, and their settlements are illegal under international law.

The plan is controversial because lots of the settlers in Gaza believe God gave the land to them to live in.

Around 8,000 people will have to leave the settlements, although Israel will still control Gaza's borders.

In Gaza itself, the Israeli army has just ended a two-day operation in which 17 Palestinians were killed.

The raid was part of plans to stop any Palestinian attacks in the time running up to when Israelis could leave.

Ariel Sharon has promised to pay the families forced to leave their homes compensation.

There are also Jewish settlements in another area where many Palestinians live, called the West Bank.

Around 400,000 people live in the settlements in the West Bank and in Gaza.
