The attack happened at around 8am local time, as people were arriving for work in the Seidiyeh district of the city.

Some witnesses said a fuel tanker drove towards the police building as officers were arriving and then exploded.

The blast was the latest in a series of bombings which have targeted Iraqi police and government officials.

Television pictures from the scene showed a huge crater in the street, and debris scattered over a large area.
