Millions of kids orphaned by Aids
Updated 13 July 2004, 12.05

At least 15 million children worldwide have lost a mum or dad to Aids.

Children's charity Unicef has warned that this number could rise to 25 million by 2010.

Many are orphans who don't get to go to school, have to look after brothers and sisters and are taken advantage of because they are vulnerable.

Health bosses are meeting to discuss the world Aids problem but Unicef says not enough is being done to help the children who are affected by it.

Almost 12 million Aids orphans live in southern Africa, and the charity is worried about the effect this will have on local communities in the future.

Crisis

Aids related illnesses have already killed 20 million people worldwide.

And 40 million people are thought to have HIV, the virus which destroys the body's ability to fight off illnesses and can lead to Aids.
