  Rebuilding begins at Ground Zero
Updated 04 July 2004, 16.35

Daniel Libeskind's design for the World Trade Centre area
Building the skyscraper that will replace the World Trade Center has begun in New York.

The Freedom Tower is set to be the tallest building in the world, reaching 541m in to the sky - that's over half a kilometre.

Instead of a traditional ceremony to break the ground at the site, a huge block of granite was laid as the corner stone of the building.

Developers hope the new tower will be finished by 2009.

It took a while to agree what to put in place of the Twin Towers that were attacked and destroyed on 11 September 2001.

Many people were disappointed with the first designs put forward for replacement buildings.

A competition was then launched and architect Daniel Libeskind's plan won.
