Children in Sudan dying of hunger
Updated 17 June 2004, 15.02
Refugees in Sudan
Hundreds of children have started to starve to death in Sudan in Africa.

Thousands of black African Sudanese people have been forced out of their homes and villages by armies working for the government.

Many of these families are now heading to refugee camps on the border of Sudan and Chad, but camps don't have enough supplies or aid to feed everyone.

The charity Save the Children is now calling for urgent food deliveries to stop thousands dying of hunger.

The European Union has agreed to send £40m to help tackle the famine.

Children are thought to be most at risk and in one camp in Kalma, 400 are reported to be so ill they can't eat.

Nine-month-old Adam was bought to a refugee camp by his mother, who walked for 10 days with no food after their village was burnt down.

The area worst affected is Darfur, where most of the fighting is taking place.

Charities have warned around 300,000 people in Darfur could still starve even if help is sent immediately.

About 10,000 people have already died there since rebels started fighting the government last year, and one million have fled their homes.
