  Iraq plan gets European backing
Updated 08 June 2004, 10.18
A new plan may make the future of Iraq a bit clearer
The future of Iraq is a bit clearer today after France approved a US and UK plan for what happens next there.

The US and UK have asked the UN to vote on the resolution to let their soldiers stay in Iraq after Iraqis take control there.

At the moment a US-led group is making the decisions in Iraq, but on 30 June power transfers to a group of Iraqis.

They will make a temporary government and the resolution will give them some control over big military missions.

The temporary government is made up of Iraqis, although they have been selected rather than voted for by people living there.

The decision to give that Iraqi government some control over the soldiers there was very important, as France and Germany may not have supported the resolution otherwise.

A government elected completely by the people living in Iraq is expected to take power early in 2006.

Foreign troops are expected to leave around that time, although some may be asked to stay longer.
