Death toll up in Caribbean floods
Updated 27 May 2004, 09.14
The Dominican Republic has been devastated by floods
At least 860 people are now thought to have died in floods in the Caribbean.

Many more are still missing and emergency workers have been searching for survivors following the severe floods and mudslides on Tuesday.

The disaster happened after two weeks of heavy rain in Haiti and the Dominican Republic which share the island of Hispaniola.

The recovery effort is continuing, but hope is fading for people whose relatives are still missing.

Lots of roads are still blocked by the landslides, mudslides and rockfalls caused by the floods.

Help for survivors

Troops from Haiti have been helping with relief work, and foreign peacekeeping troops have been using helicopters to take water and food to the survivors.

The damage has been estimated at many millions of dollars and the European Union is getting ready to send an emergency package worth two million euros (£1.3m).

The Dominican Republic is a popular holiday destination with British tourists.
