UK Iraq troops may fill in for US
Updated 16 October 2004, 12.03
UK soldiers may be moving in Iraq
Hundreds of UK troops in Iraq could be moved to a more dangerous part of the country to cover for US soldiers.

The US wants to send some of their soldiers to the city of Falluja where lots of fighting is happening, but need other soldiers to fill in for them.

So 650 UK troops may be on the move to the south of Baghdad from their base in Basra in southern Iraq.

If UK troops do stand in for the US ones it could mean them staying in Iraq for a bit longer than planned.

Falluja, Iraq
The Ministry of Defence has confirmed they're talking to the US but said no decision on moving the troops had been made.

Although parts of Baghdad are more dangerous than south Iraq in places it's not thought that's where UK troops would be sent.

Some politicians have asked for the government to answer questions about the plans as soon as possible.
