Big meeting to try to help Africa
Updated 06 October 2004, 16.39
African children
Newsround has travelled to Ethiopia to report on Tony Blair's trip to Africa.

The Prime Minister is in Ethiopia to discuss the problems faced by the continent.

The Commission on Africa will try to find solutions to the problems such as poverty, health and world trade.

Africa is an extremely poor continent where 75% of the population have to survive on just 1 a day and has huge debts that it can't afford to repay.

People agree there are no simple solutions but it is hoped the meeting will help Africa help itself.

Africa is the only part of the developing world that has actually got poorer in the 25 years.

Wars and crop failures have left the continent unable to support it's huge population.

Hope for the future

A massive agriculture project in Ethiopia should mean an end to the country's need for food aid by 2008.

The Commission will report back in 2005.

Keep watching Newsround for Ellie's reports on the meeting and her interview with 12-year-old Sintayehu Solomon from Ethiopia.
