  Saddam 'being returned to Iraq'
Updated 11 May 2004, 17.52

Saddam Hussein is going back to Iraq where he will face a war crimes hearing about his treatment of people in the country, according to reports.

The former leader will return to the country in time for the transfer of power from the US-led coalition to a new Iraqi government on 30 June.

US officials have been holding Saddam at a secret location since his capture in Iraq in December last year.

It's thought his war crimes trial could start at the beginning of next year.

Saddam will be returned to Iraq with around 100 other suspects, according to the man in charge of setting up the trials.

'Chemical Ali'

Saddam's former deputy prime minister Tariq Aziz and Ali Hassan al-Majid - the man known as "chemical Ali" for his gas attacks - are also said to be going back.

opening quoteI'm very glad that they've caught him. No one should suffer like the Iraqis did. I don't think he should get the death penalty. He should suffer.closing quote
