Many dead in Gaza Strip clashes
Updated 30 September 2004, 21.59
Palestinians in the Jabaliya refugee camp flee the fighting
Israeli troops have entered a refugee camp called Jabaliya, sparking fierce fighting across the Gaza Strip area.

At least 31 people have been killed, and at least 130 injured, including Palestinian civilians and fighters, as well as Israeli soldiers and settlers.

The Israeli army says it's trying to stop Palestinian rocket attacks on Israeli towns, following an attack on a town which killed two Israeli children.

Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has now ordered more troops into Gaza.

Flattened buildings

It's the first time in two years that Israeli soldiers have got into the centre of the Jabaliya refugee camp.

Many residents were forced to flee when the bulldozers rolled into the camp flattening buildings.

Reports on Israeli radio say Israel's Defence Minister Shaul Mofaz said he launched the military operation in the Gaza Strip to stop Palestinians firing rockets at Israeli towns.

Palestinians have condemned the Israeli offensive.

"This is a dangerous indicator which will lead to failure," said Nabil Abu Rudeinah, an important Palestinian official close to leader Yasser Arafat.
