Blair says sorry for Iraqi abuse
Updated 10 May 2004, 08.06
Iraq
The prime minister has said sorry for any bad treatment of prisoners in Iraq by soldiers from the UK.

Tony Blair was being interviewed on French television and said the soldiers responsible would be punished under military rules.

Mr Blair also said it was important to realise that very few soldiers have been behaving in this way.

Later on Monday the defence secretary will speak to MPs about the claims of abuse that has been happening in Iraq.

A human rights group called Amnesty say a report they sent to the government last year warned Iraqis were being badly treated.

Now Geoff Hoon will be asked what the government knew and when about what has been happening in Iraq.

In the French TV interview Mr Blair said: "We apologise deeply to anyone who has been mistreated by any of our soldiers. That is absolutely and totally unacceptable."
