Bush sorry for US abuse of Iraqis
Updated 06 May 2004, 20.57

President George Bush has said sorry for the first time for the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by US troops.

He told reporters at the White House he was "sorry for the humiliation suffered by the prisoners and their families".

On Wednesday Mr Bush gave TV interviews to two Arab TV channels but didn't say sorry during them, which made some people in the Middle East very angry.

Mr Bush added that photos appearing to show prisoners being very badly treated made Americans "sick to our stomachs".

A spokesperson for the president had apologised for him a few days ago, but this is the first time Mr Bush himself has said sorry.

Things got worse on Thursday when yet more photos were released showing prisoners being badly treated.

It has also been revealed that people in the US military knew about the photos months ago but did not let the president know about them.

Mr Bush said he only realised how bad things were when he saw pictures on television.
