Haiti death toll rises to 1,000
Updated 23 September 2004, 08.40
Aid tries to get through the flood waters to survivors in Haiti
The death toll in north-western Haiti after tropical storm Jeanne has now risen to more than a 1,000, according to officials.

Relief workers fear that many more bodies will by found, as they struggle to get supplies to survivors.

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has appealed for urgent international aid for Haiti.

Rescuers are struggling to help victims and survivors are wading through deep mud trying to save furniture and food.

Every truck moving, full or empty, is mobbed by survivors desperate for food and clean water, according to a BBC correspondent.

Many residents have been forced to take shelter on rooftops.

The confirmed death toll has reached 1,013 in Gonaives, with about 1,200 more missing.

The UN World Food Programme estimates 175,000 people are without food, water and electricity.

UN helicopters have already brought emergency supplies to Gonaives but the trucks are having trouble getting through the flood waters.
