Iraq torture photos may be fakes
Updated 02 May 2004, 10.08
Iraq
Photos that appear to show British soldiers treating prisoners in Iraq very badly may not be real.

An investigation into the photos has been started, but army sources have said some of the things in the photos don't look right to them.

They say a type of gun and a truck shown in the photos were not used by UK soldiers serving in Iraq.

The photos were printed in the Daily Mirror newspaper on Saturday, and lots of people are very angry about them.

Tony Blair called the pictures "unacceptable"
Prime Minister Tony Blair said that if the photos are real they are "completely and totally unacceptable".

The head of the army, General Sir Michael Jackson said that if the reports were true the soldiers involved "are not fit to wear the Queen's uniform".

The soldiers in the photos are said to be from the Queen's Lancashire Regiment, but sources close to the regiment have raised doubts about the photos.

As well as the gun and truck the type of hat worn in the photos is also a bit suspicious, as they say say soldiers in Iraq wore berets or hard hats - and not floppy hats.
