  Fireworks welcome new EU members

The EU is now 10 countries larger
Fireworks and lots of huge parties have celebrated 10 new countries becoming members of the European Union (EU).

The 15 old members welcomed in Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia at midnight.

The leaders of all 25 EU members will meet up on Saturday for a flag raising ceremony in Dublin, Ireland.

Cities in the new member states were packed to see fireworks at midnight and hear the European anthem - Ode to Joy.

There are now 455 million people living in the 25 combined countries of the European Union.

The ceremony is happening in Ireland because they hold the presidency of the EU at the moment.

The presidency is held for six months at a time with each country taking it in turns.
