  US attacks Falluja with warplanes
Updated 28 April 2004, 08.02
Bombed-out home
US warplanes have attacked targets in the Iraqi town of Falluja in a second night of heavy fighting.

Gunfire flashed for nearly two hours, leaving an orange glow and clouds of black smoke in the sky.

Anti-coalition forces have holed themselves up in the town, which has been under siege for some time.

Earlier on Tuesday, US forces had dropped leaflets in the town, saying: "Surrender, you are surrounded. We are coming to arrest you."

The assault began as an important Iraqi politician was speaking to the United Nations about the proposed transfer of power on 30 June.

Lakhdar Brahimi said the timetable for setting up a temporary Iraqi government could be achieved, even though time was running short.

He said the members of the new government should be named by the end of May.
