More Iraqis killed in US fighting
Updated 27 April 2004, 15.39
US soldiers have been fighting in Najaf
There has been more fighting in Iraq, with US soldiers saying they have killed 43 armed Iraqis near Najaf.

The fighting happened on Monday, not long after Spanish troops left their base there, having been ordered home by the country's new prime minister.

Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero doesn't agree with the military action in Iraq so has called Spanish soldiers back.

The US also said they had destroyed an anti-aircraft weapon in the area with one of their helicopters.

The people the US soldiers were fighting are armed supporters of a man called Moqtada Sadr, a cleric who wants the US troops to leave Iraq.

Najaf, Iraq
The US is currently in charge of Iraq, but will handover control to a council run by people from Iraq on 1 July.

Now the US have said some of the powers it has at the moment will have to stay in their control.

Secretary of State Colin Powell said it was important that coalition troops continued to operate under US command.
