  Hurricane Ivan batters Alabama
Updated 16 September 2004, 18.13

The US state of Alabama has felt the full force of hurricane Ivan after being directly hit by the huge storm.

Wind and rain pounded the Gulf Coast from Louisiana to Florida, battering the coastline. Fortunately New Orleans escaped a much-feared direct hit.

Most people in Alabama took official advice and moved inland, and those staying behind waited in shelters.

It was the worst weather to hit the area in 25 years and left 100,000 people without power.

Although Ivan has now lost some of its strength, it's still strong enough to cause serious damage.

Further south another hurricane called Jeanne is on its way. It has already killed two people in Puerto Rico.

Jeanne is now heading towards the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas.

Two people were also killed when a tornado struck Panama City in Florida.
