More UK soldiers could go to Iraq
Updated 26 April 2004, 07.52
Troops in Iraq
More British soldiers could be sent to Iraq following Spain's decision to remove its troops from the country.

One report claims that a further 2,000 troops could be heading for the country, joining the 7,500 British troops already stationed there.

Last week, the new Spanish government announced it was withdrawing its 1,300-strong force from Iraq.

Government officials will attend a series of meetings this week to decide whether more British troops are needed.

Meanwhile, the US has reportedly decided not to launch a major assault on Iraqi fighters in the troubled city of Falluja.

Instead it's decided to start patrols with Iraqi security forces.

US Marines launched operations in the city on 5 April after four US citizens were murdered there in March.

More deaths

There were more deaths over the weekend when oil terminals near the southern city of Basra were targeted.

Three boats exploded in what appeared to be suicide attacks , killing and injuring several US soldiers.
