  US residents flee Hurricane Ivan
Updated 15 September 2004, 09.59
Queues to get out of New Orleans
Residents of the US's southern coast are fleeing their homes as Hurricane Ivan churns towards them, fresh from its devastating swoop of the Carribean.

Queues built up on the main roads out of the city of New Orleans in Louisiana as people headed for safer territory.

About 750,000 people along the coast in the states of Florida, Mississippi and Alabama were also told to evacuate.

"I beg people on the coast: Do not ride this storm out," said the state governor of Mississippi.

Forecasters say the storm, blamed for at least 68 deaths in the Caribbean, could reach speeds of 160mph by the time it blows on to the US coast.

The storm is more than 100 miles wide and has already left a trail of destruction in Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Cuba.
