  Hurricane Ivan slams into Jamaica
Updated 11 September 2004, 10.56

Driving rain and high winds are lashing Jamaica as one of the worst hurricanes in its history has struck the island.

Hurricane Ivan has caused flooding and waves two storeys high have been reported around the coast as the storm travels through the Caribbean.

The electricity has been shut down for safety reasons, leading to a black out across the island as winds of up to 155mph blow buildings down.

A state of emergency has been declared by Prime Minister PJ Patterson.

He said: "We have to prepare for the worst case scenario. Let us pray for God's care."

Troops are patrolling the streets, and many people have left their homes to go to shelters.

There are reports that some people are taking advantage of the storm to steal property while people are hiding from the weather.

Hurricane Ivan has already left a massive trail of damage in the Caribbean, killing at least 27 people, mostly in Grenada.
