  Double suicide bomb rocks Israel
Updated 31 August 2004, 14.15

At least 16 people have been killed in what appears to be a double suicide bomb attack in Israel, local medical officials have said.

Explosions went off on two buses in the city of Beersheba in the south of the country on Tuesday.

Many more people are said to have been injured, some of them seriously.

Israeli police have blamed Palestinian suicide bombers. If this is true, it's the first of such attacks to happen in Israel for several months.

A Palestinian Cabinet Minister said: "The Palestinian Authority condemns any attacks that target civilians, whether Israelis or Palestinians."

An Israeli ambulance worker said the buses were full of parents and children, who were out shopping in the last few days of the school holidays.
