Dozens die in Iraq mosque bombing
Updated 26 August 2004, 17.30
Wounded man in Kufa
Iraq's top Shia cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani has started a peace mission to the troubled city of Najaf after at least 74 people died in a bombing.

The attack happened at the main mosque in a place called Kufa, near Najaf. A further 315 people were injured.

It's not clear who carried out the attack. It follows a three-week battle between Shia fighters led by radical cleric Moqtada Sadr and US-led forces.

Ayatollah Sistani's representatives are talking to the fighters.

The cleric is going to Najaf with thousands of supporters, to try to stop the conflict there.

The people in the mosque were preparing to go to meet him when the attack happened.

Ceasefire

US-led forces said they had not carried out any operations in Kufa for 24 hours and the temporary Iraqi government said it had called a ceasefire in the city.
