  US-led forces attacked in Baghdad
Updated 05 April 2004, 07.24

Shia Muslims in Iraqi capital Baghdad have attacked US-led troops.

Seven American soldiers were killed in the Sadr City area of Baghdad, fighting supporters of a controversial cleric who are angry after his arrest.

Reports also say the same group have taken control of a local government building in the southern city of Basra.

They are part of the group which was involved in fighting with Spanish-led forces in the city of Najaf on Sunday, which killed at least 20 people.

Spanish-led troops fired guns at a group of people who want US-led forces out of Iraq, although some people say the protesters may have fired first.

One report said the protestors were throwing stones at the soldiers who then started shooting.

Four of the people killed were soldiers from El Salvador working as part of the coalition forces in Iraq.

The marchers are supporters of a cleric called Moqtada Sadr, and some of them are thought to be members of a banned army.

Most of the attacks in Iraq have come from Sunni groups.

Some people think these new attacks by Shia Muslims mean there could be a big civil war in Iraq.
