Rubbish keeps kids out of school
Updated 18 March 2004, 11.10
Italian schoolboy
Thousands of children in Naples are to get a the day off school because the rubbish problem in the area is so bad.

Schools have been ordered to shut because Italian officials say the rotting waste could hurt their health.

There have not been any rubbish collections for two weeks now because of a row over plans to build new incinerators which burn the rubbish.

Locals around Naples do not want them, but the dumps are overflowing so there is nowhere left to put new rubbish.

Some people living in the town of Aversa are so fed up with the stench, they have tried to set fire to the rubbish themselves, which is dangerous.

Other residents are having to wear masks over their faces so as not to be sick with the stinky fumes.

Tourists visiting the ancient Roman site of Herculaneum have to put up with the not-so-Roman rotting plastic bags at the entrance.

Officials are trying to come up with a solution, one of which is to send the trash by train to be burned in northern regions.
