  President Aristide 'leaves Haiti'
Updated 29 February 2004, 12.28
Jean-Bertrand Aristide
President Aristide, ruler of the Caribbean island of Haiti, has left his country after international pressure to quit, a US spokesman said.

There has been a lot of fighting in the country, as rebels tried to force Jean-Bertrand Aristide to hand over power.

He apparently left the island in a unmarked jet on Sunday morning, bound for the near-by Dominican Republic.

The rebels were in control of all the country's major cities, except the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Seek asylum

Aristide was the first freely-elected leader in Haiti in the 200 years that it has been independent.

The UN are very worried about how dangerous the country is.

The US and France, who used to run the country, said he should quit for the good of the people of Haiti.

It's thought that he may seek asylum in Morocco, Taiwan or Panama.
