  Train conquers Australian outback
Updated 01 February 2004, 15.07
The Ghan train in Australia crossing the Outback
The first passenger train ever to cross the Australian continent from north to south left Adelaide on Sunday.

The mile long train rumbled off for the three day journey to Darwin, cheered by thousands of Australians.

The railway which had been planned for 140 years was only half completed until this year.

Described as one of the world's greatest train voyages, it passes through forbidding desert country known as the Never Never.

The Never Never Train

"It was nicknamed the 'Never Never train' because of where it was supposed to go and because they thought it would never happen ," said a local politician.

The Ghan train in Australia crossing the Outback
The 1,851 mile line is one of Australia's biggest ever engineering projects, costing over £500 million.

Daytime temperatures were so hot in the Outback that builders worked under lights through the cool nights and slept through the days.

Named the Ghan after the Afghan camel drivers who crossed the route 140 years ago, the train was pulled by two engines painted in bright Aboriginal colours.
