Boy dies of bird flu in Thailand
Updated 26 January 2004, 12.02
Chickens in a farm that is being cleaned
A six-year old boy has died of bird flu in Thailand, it's been confirmed.

He's the first person to have definitely died from the virus, but Thai officials think as many as five people may have been killed by the bug.

It's thought the boy must have caught the disease from touching a chicken that had died from the flu.

There's no need to worry about eating chicken though - you can't catch it like that, and so far experts think you can't catch the disease from people.

We used to buy lots of chicken from Thailand, but to stop the flu spreading the European Union has banned it. Most of our chicken comes from South America.

The flu, known as avian flu, has spread to other parts of Asia such as Vietnam, Indonesia, Cambodia, Taiwan, Japan, and South Korea.

Officials in Pakistan also report that a different and less dangerous kind of bird flu had been found in chickens in the southern port of Karachi.

Farms thought to be infected with the virus are being cleaned really well and lots of chickens have been killed in the hope of stopping the disease from spreading.
