Updated 21 January 2004, 13.44
George Bush has made his State of the Union address
US president George Bush says the world is a safer place because of the things his government have done.

He was making the State of the Union address, which is one of the most important political speeches in the US.

The State of the Union speech is written in the US Constitution, and this one is seen as a big step for Mr Bush as he tries to be relected.

America will vote on who will be president in November, with Mr Bush up against an as yet unknown Democrat.

The Democratic Party are going through the process needed to choose their candidate, with Senator John Kerry taking a big step on Tuesday.

He won a vote in Iowa when US voters starting deciding which Democratic candidate would be the best to challenge Mr Bush.

In the speech the President also talked of how the US economy is getting better, saying there are more jobs than when he took over from Bill Clinton.

Mr Bush talked about the war in Iraq too, saying: "For all who love peace and freedom, the world without Saddam Hussein's regime is a better and safer place."
