US says Saddam Hussein is a POW
Updated 10 January 2004, 11.43
Saddam Hussein after he was captured (left), and then shaved of his beard
The US says Saddam Hussein, the former leader of Iraq is being treated as an enemy Prisoner of War (POW).

That means they have to treat him well while he is their prisoner, and also means he may face trial for things he did while he was in charge of Iraq.

Now the International Red Cross say they want to be allowed to visit Saddam to make sure he is healthy.

The US says documents they found with the former Iraqi president have helped them capture other people they wanted.

Tikrit, Iraq
When the US captured Saddam Hussein in December they showed a video of him being checked by a doctor.

That's annoyed some people, but the US said they needed to show the film so the Iraqi people knew he couldn't hurt them.

opening quoteI'm very glad that they've caught him. No one should suffer like the Iraqis did. I don't think he should get the death penalty. He should suffer.closing quote
