  Children missing after mudslides
Updated 27 December 2003, 12.45
The mudslide swept away everything in its path
Children are believed to be among nine people still missing after mudslides swept through camps near Los Angeles in the US state of California.

At least seven people were killed when a torrent of mud, rocks and tree trunks tumbled through the area on Thursday.

The mudslide was triggered by heavy rain. The area was hit by wildfires in October and November, so there weren't many trees to stop the flow of mud.

Rescuers have already saved 14 people. Their search for survivors continues.

Most of the people who died were believed to be family and friends of the caretaker of a youth camp, which was closed for a clean-up following the wildfires.

The mudslides also destroyed 32 caravans at a separate site.

Three bridges were washed away and rescuers had to trek across ground strewn with logs and branches to reach those trapped in the mud.
